What Makes a Spot Extractor Different from a Carpet Extractor

Spot extractors are intentionally smaller and more portable than full carpet or hard surface extractors — most run 2.5 to 3-gallon tanks rather than the 10+ gallon tanks on a walk-behind unit. That tradeoff is the point: a spot extractor sacrifices tank capacity and continuous run time for portability and speed, letting a single person grab it, respond to a spill, and be done in minutes. For full-room or whole-facility carpet cleaning, a larger carpet extractor is still the right tool — spot extractors are built to complement that equipment, not replace it.

Choosing the Right Spot Extractor

Heated vs. Non-Heated — Heated spot extractors (using in-line heaters in the 600-watt range) break down oils and set-in stains more effectively than cold water alone, which matters most for grease, food, and older stains. Non-heated units are lighter, simpler, and often less expensive — a reasonable choice for routine spills and lighter-duty spot work.

Pump Pressure (PSI) — Standard spot extractors run around 55 PSI, sufficient for most carpet and upholstery spotting. Higher-pressure models (100 PSI and above) tackle more deeply embedded soil without oversaturating the surface.

Vacuum Motor Stage — A 2-stage vacuum motor improves water recovery and speeds up drying compared to a single-stage motor, which matters for high-traffic areas that need to be back in service quickly.

Tank Size — Most spot extractors run 2.5 to 3-gallon tanks. Larger tanks within that range mean fewer refills during back-to-back spot jobs, while smaller tanks keep the unit lighter for one-person transport.

Pre-Treat Tough Stains — The solution built into most spot extractors isn't strong enough on its own for deeply set stains; a quality pre-treatment spray applied and left to sit for a few minutes before extraction significantly improves results.
