Air Scrubber vs. Negative Air Machine: Know the Difference

These terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe two different operating modes:

Air Scrubber Mode — The unit recirculates filtered air back into the same room, cleaning the air within an occupied or contained space without exhausting it elsewhere.

Negative Air Machine Mode — The unit exhausts filtered air outside the containment area, creating negative pressure that actively prevents contaminants from escaping into adjacent spaces. This is the standard approach for mold remediation, asbestos abatement, and other regulated containment work.

Many units, including several in our AeroClean lineup, can run in either mode depending on how they're ducted — worth confirming for your specific project requirements.

Sizing Your Air Filtration System: CFM and ACH

The key sizing calculation for any air filtration system is Air Changes per Hour (ACH) — how many times the unit fully filters the air volume of your containment space in an hour. To estimate the CFM you need:

  1. Calculate your containment's cubic footage (length x width x height).
  2. Divide by 10 for a rough estimate of the CFM needed to achieve roughly 6 ACH.

Industry guidelines call for a minimum of 4 ACH for general construction and remediation work, with 6 ACH or higher preferred during active demolition, mold remediation, or heavily contaminated environments. Always size the unit to your space's actual cubic footage — not the square footage alone, since ceiling height significantly changes the calculation.

Getting the Most from Your Air Filtration System

Calculate ACH Before Choosing Equipment — Size the unit (or combination of units) to your containment's actual cubic footage and required air changes per hour — don't guess based on square footage alone.

Replace Pre-Filters Before the HEPA Stage Clogs — Pre-filters protect the more expensive HEPA filter from heavy dust loading; letting them clog shortens HEPA filter life significantly.

Watch for Filter Change Indicators — Models with pressure gauges or alarm panels take the guesswork out of knowing when performance has dropped due to a loaded filter.
